Deborah Shepherd was born in Freshford, Somerset, grew up in Weston-super-Mare and trained to be a teacher at Homerton College, Cambridge. She has been writing books for children since she took early retirement from teaching. She was unhappy with the imposition of the national curriculum for all children of the same age irrespective of their ability, and the rise of the excerpt culture as opposed to reading whole, real books. She writes mainly for the 8+ age range, although she has also recently written and illustrated books for her grandchildren.
